Its A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World -  I found out yesterday that the company I work for did a contract about a year ago for another company that was doing a subcontracted design for one particular part of the new XBox 360. If you looked at it, you would never guess what part we ended up designing. You would also never guess how much we made on it (neither of which I'm allowed to tell you at the moment).

Lets just say that the world is insane when it comes to contracting engineers.

Letters With Raul - Rep. Grijalva, my "representative", finally found time to reply to my inquiry to him about Terri Schiavo. With a rapid response like that, I worry about things like the Pony Express becoming obsolete.

May 16, 2005

Dear Mr. Maynard :

Thank you for sharing your concerns about Terri Schiavo . I appreciate hearing from you.

First and foremost, this was a horrible personal tragedy. I was deeply saddened by Mrs. Schiavo s situation, and I send my condolences to her family.

However, this was not the place for Congress to intervene.

Congress must not infringe upon state law, state courts, federal courts, and the personal rights of individual Americans. This case had been fully adjudicated over several years, and the courts had consistently determined the facts as to Ms. Schiavo s condition and her wishes specifically that Ms. Schiavo did not wish to be kept alive in a persistent vegetative state.

Congressional leaders have no right to substitute their judgment for that of multiple courts that have extensively considered the issues involved in this intensely personal, family matter.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this issue with me. I hope you continue to keep in touch with me on the issues of importance to you.

Sincerely,
Raul M. Grijalva
Member of Congress

The amount of Federalism in the response is incredible, especially given his lack of respect for that philosophy of the Constitution he has shown in the past. Unfortunately, it is as incoherent as it is inconsistent.

The job of government, at any level, is twofold: to protect the innocent from the guilty and punish the guilty for the innocent. The courts failed to protect Terri by recognizing as legitimate an unsubstantiated claim that she wanted to die. It was based solely on Michael's claim. Since there was no corroboration there was no basis to grant custody or the desire to starve her to death. By letting the courts abdicate their protection responsibilities, Rep. Grijalva abdicated his own responsibilities for the same.

Such a complete disregard for the protective responsibilities of government disqualifies him from holding the office of representative, let alone senator, if his ambition points him in such a direction six years from now. By then McCain, having lost another presidential bid, will be up for reelection with a base that hates his role as Cassius and will be looking for a replacement. That replacement, having won the primary, will give the Democrats the impression that the Republicans a fractured. They will present a "reasonable, middle-of-the-road" candidate, perhaps Raul.

Just remember that if you ever end up comatose (or even awake but unable to speak), Raul Grijalva won't be doing anything to help protect you.

Vger - Voyager 1 has crossed the Termination Shock and become humanity's first interstellar space probe (includes cool audio). It isn't quite at the end of the solar system, but its very, very close.

In a relative sense.

Welcome To The Desert - Lileks is planning to come to AZ in 5 4 years. I can only encourage him to come in the fall, so that he has time to acclimate to the area before the summer burns him like a match. I would recommend he move to Tucson, as Scottsdale would crush him in the summer, but Tucson would only break him.

Speaking of out of towners not accustomed to the weather blast furnace, Hugh Hewitt was in town yesterday for a book signing, wearing a suit & tie. In late May.

No. one. wears. a. suit. here. in. May.

Jennifer & I went to see him, of course. He signed our copy of Blog and we had a nice, short chat. He had some sage advice for MM.net, which I will follow.

10%, baby, 10%.

Poetry - Something today from World War 2: The Thunder of the Guns, by W. S. T. Tracy.

Like the storm that's in the making
When the rumbling thunder runs
And the hills and valleys tremble:
That's THE THUNDER OF THE GUNS.

When the aiming posts are planted
And the firing order comes,
Then the layers work their magic
With their sight and bubble runs.

Then the check is on the charges
And the range that's on the drum,
Then the muzzle flashes lightning:
That's THE THUNDER OF THE GUNS.

It's in the fury of the battle
When the understanding comes
That the gunner is forever,
A partner with the guns.

The gunner's pride is legend
And the battles he has won,
Bring Regimental Honours:
Through THE THUNDER OF HIS GUNS.

With the smoking breaches empty
And the dust and cordite gone,
There's a rumble in the distance:
That's THE THUNDER OF THE GUNS.

The Gods of War have finished
And the Sands of Time have run,
But always there's the memory of
THE THUNDER OF THE GUNS.

And as today becomes the future
Our sons will tell their sons,
That the men whose blood they carry:
Knew THE THUNDER OF THE GUNS.

In the valley of the shadows
When his comrades are as one,
Their hearts will surely gladden
For they're the only ones
That understand the music:
In THE THUNDER OF THE GUNS.

Oh Johnny Boy, the Dems, the Dems, Are Calling - Now that the blowhards have all raised the temperature by 10 degrees with their hot-air bloviating, its my turn to add some sage advice to the debate.

John McCain is a political hack.

His miscalculation on the judges issue will result in his finishing dead last in the Arizona primary in 2008, putting him in the same rank of also-rans as Dick Gephardt, with those who couldn't carry their own state. Arizona will give him a boost, though. We've never had a native go to the White House. Missouri at least had Truman, who didn't fare too badly in DC. But I vow to everyone reading this blog, I will do whatever it takes to sink McCain in 2008, despite Big Media cheerleading for their favorite Korah.

McCain is dead in the water. Jon Kyl has better odds, and he's a real senator. But I still can't figure out why senators think senators can be Presidents. We haven't had one of those since Lyndon fargin' Johnson (unelected Gerald Ford notwithstanding), and by the time 2008 rolls around, that will be a whole 44 years. Governors have much better odds, and that's starting without a handicap like [party membership]-in-name-only. They have the executive experience it takes to lead, not grandstand.

But look how good a senator he is! He's instituting sports reform! At least he's not driven by the polls. Or maybe he is - based on how the base has reacted, perhaps he's trying to distract them with an issue they only marginally care about. That would simply be more evidence that he is a political hack poorly qualified to govern from 1600 Pennsylvania, as he's unable to understand the base that would get him elected.

The one good thing that I've seen since this whole thing blew up is that while Democrats may be able to define "extraordinary circumstances", but Republicans have the ability to define "Bravo Sierra". That's a silver lining, but it relies on the ability of the Republican caucus to hold together on the definition of bravo sierra. Their inability to identify it in their own party undermines my trust in their ability to run the "higher" chamber.

It may be a silver lining, but its awfully tarnished.

A long time ago, on a blog very, very near - I've decided to finally jump ship and switch the site over to WordPress. That will be happening sometime tomorrow, so don't be surprised if stuff starts breaking. In the meantime, check out Gilby's review of SW:ROTS, which Jennifer & I will be seeing tonight with some friends. He also has some wise (and so sneaky-bastardly) advice for webmasters.
