Unknown Blog - Pet My Chinchilla Now, by Dante, who writes with e. e. cummings style capitalization.

Southern Joke - Courtesy of American Dinosaur

A very genteel Southern lady was driving across the Savannah River Bridge in Georgia one day. As she neared the top of the bridge, she noticed a young man fixing to jump.

She stopped her car, rolled down the window and said, "Please don’t jump, think of your dear mother and father."

He replied, "Mom and Dad are both dead; I’m going to jump."

She said, "Well, think of your wife and children."

He replied, "I’m not married and I don’t have any kids."

She said, "Well, think of Robert E. Lee."

He replied, ‘’Who’s Robert E. Lee?'’

She replied, "Well, just go ahead and jump, you dumb @$$ Yankee."

Abbreviated Religious Studies - The three major religions of the world:

  • Judaism: We're waiting for the Messiah, stop bugging us

  • Christianity: The Messiah has come, believe in Him

  • Islam: There is no Messiah, now pray towards Mecca or I'll cut off your head

I know, I know. It's culturally insensitive. It's also historically accurate. Jews have always been persecuted, Christians have always been evangelical, and Mohammedanism has always been spread at the point of a sword.

Accidents, Inc. - Here in Tucson we have crosswalks with stoplights and crosswalks without. I used to hate the ones with stoplights, but after yesterday, I don't.

On the way to work yesterday some IDIOT decided to stop at a crosswalk without a light before the pedestrian started to cross. People started to stop behind them because they had to, while people in the lane next to him stopped because they were expected to stop, lest they be accused of being jerks. I was fourth in line behind the car that started it all. I was tooling along at nearly 40 miles an hour when the car in front of me stopped, and I barely stopped in time. The care behind me barely stopped. The car behind her, well...

Now I understand why the stoplights are there.

The F150 hit the Tahoe, which barely tapped me. I didn't hit anyone. Everyone in front of me left when the crosswalk was clear, while the three of us turned onto the side street and inspected the damage. My rear bumper had a small, barely noticed scratch on it, while the Tahoe had a scratch on the front and a dent in the back. The F150 had the most serious problem, with its front bumper bent such that the edge just touched the front passenger tire, preventing it from rotating freely. Fortunately, no one was hurt. We traded information and I went on my way, as I had the least damage and I wasn't planning to file a claim. The other two stayed behind. We didn't call the police, as they would be obligated to assign blame to one of the three of us, which wouldn't have been right.

All this could have been prevented if the driver right in front of the crosswalk had not stopped. In this case, courtesy killed the bumper. The pedestrian was waiting, as they should have been, for a break in the traffic. By artificially creating one the driver who stopped for him caused the accident. The lesson: don't sacrifice safety for courtesy, as your kindness to one will be lost on another.

George's Almost-Judges - God knows I'm getting tired of this issue. Its time for the Senate Republican leadership to grow a spine, and its time for the Democrats to stop claiming this is a checks & balances issue. It's not. It's a Senate rules issue, and they have been abusing the rule for four years now. The filibuster was used once against a circuit court or higher appointee in 214 years, then used ten times in four years. That's an abuse. It's not a checks & balances issue. To illustrate that, let's go back to elementary civics & enumerate the limits each branch has on the others:

  • The Executive checks the Legislative with the veto

  • The Executive checks the Judicial with the pardon

  • The Legislative checks the Executive with the veto override

  • The Legislative checks the Judicial with the jurisdiction limit

  • The Judicial checks the Executive with the interpretation of law

  • The Judicial checks the Legislative with the interpretation of law

It's as simple as that. The Constitution does not give special protections to a minority party in the Senate. The Senate does. If a majority of the Senate wishes to confirm an appointee to a position, then the minority of the Senate has a right of obstruction only as long as the rules allow it. If the rules are abused they can be clarified, and there's nothing. wrong. with. that. That is, the problem with the rule is one of abuse and underlying principle, not with existence. That's why the filibuster is going to be changed only in respect to judge confirmations, not to bills.
