Random thoughts on Easongate - Badmouthing the Military, by saying they deliberately target journalists, gives CNN a "reason" for covering the Military in a bad light. It's a bad reason, to be sure, but to them it might be enough to salve their conscience. Of course, lies are never enough to properly heal the conscience, so don't expect CNN to put out fair coverage of the military anytime soon.

As far as the story itself goes, Big Media still hasn't covered it in detail yet. One begins to wonder, nearly two weeks after the story began, if they will and if so, what will it take to get their collective heads out of their keisters. If they don't, the story could fade, but it would result in a radically different relation between blogs and Big Media - one more hostile and aggressive, instead of inquisitive, as it has been.

Fedora Tip to Captain Ed for linking to Joe Scarborough's call for Eason Jordan to be fired. He's right, if Jordan won't do the dignified thing and step down, but there's a silver lining to this cloud over Atlanta. Eason Jordan's continued presence at CNN is analogous to Kofi Annan at the UN - both have been accused of a very serious morality problem (lying for one, stealing for the other) and both have been stonewalling efforts to air clear-cut facts. But by staying in their respective posts they highlight the need for reform in both organizations. Make no mistake, I still think both should be removed, forcibly if not peacefully, but greater reform might be had if their corruption is exposed in full.

But I'm just ranting again.

Smoke Wagons - A friend of mine once came up with the term "smoke wagon" to describe a car that is on its last legs. You've seen them running around with smoke coming out the tailpipe, bumper hanging on by a coat hanger, cracked windshield. Jennifer's car is like that, but without the coat hanger. It has a really nice stereo, but that's about all you can commend it for. We just had it serviced, with the rings being replaced and the cylinder head being machined. It still smokes, but that seems to be going down lately. It certainly needs replacement, and I would like to get a nice sedan in its place.

We shall see. It seems to work well enough to pass emissions (as of last July) and not be a danger on the road.

I have a feeling I'm going to eat those words if the engine explodes.

Weird Dreams - So I've traveled back in time to September 10th, 2001, and I'm in Tucson. I have to warn everyone to get out of the World Trade Center, but I can't reveal my identity to anyone, except Jennifer and my old roommate Andrew. So how do I get to New York? I don't have to, the WTC has been relocated to the center of the U of AZ campus. Unfortunately, I'm indecisive - do I fly to Boston and impersonate an FBI officer hoping to catch the terrorists, do I stay in Tucson and evacuate the towers, what do I do? And I can't account for the differences in time zones - are the planes going to hit at 5:45 AM locally or 8:45 AM locally?

Hey, its a dream. Thankfully. Please spare me from amateur Freudian analysis.

Believe it or not, its comin' to DVD - Oh. My. Lord.

Great American Literature - The WSJ Online posts an article on Sam Spade's 75th birthday. He's the character in The Maltese Falcon, an excellent detective novel. Both the book and the article are on today's recommended reading list, put together by the editorial board of MM.net. I can't seem to find an online copy of the book, so you'll have to go find an actual dead-tree edition.

Poetry - a haiku today. Enjoy.
