February 3rd, 2005 Short quickies, then on to the important stuff - Enterprise has been cancelled, effective after this season. Pop the corks, perhaps now we can stick a fork in this over-recycled schlep across the galaxy. The Star Trek franchise has devolved into four plot devices that get recycled at least once a season: time travel, captain gets kidnapped, alien race is discovered, and torqued conflict between captain and science officer. Oh, and speaking of discovering alien races, what kind of racist crap is the Prime Directive? Apparently, it doesn't apply if the race has discovered warp drive technology. "Don't treat them as equals because they don't have warp drives" doesn't sound to me like a way of advancing scientific thought throughout the universe, it sounds like a way of keeping down the ignorant masses. Sorry if you like Star Trek, but I just had to get that off my chest. Trek stinks. Star Wars isn't so great either, but at least its more understanding of the human spirit. The salt mine isn't so dreary anymore - The flatscreen monitor has returned from its use at the trade show. Oo-rah! The State of the Union - "The road of Providence is uneven and unpredictable — yet we know where it leads: It leads to freedom" - an excellent summary of the entire speech. Freedom will continue its march because it is from God, and we will continue to apply the Bush Doctrine - intolerance for intolerant regimes. My concerns about the speech: he proposed a lot on new spending. He proposed letting Social Security continue (I think it should be killed). I like the fact that he is willing to continue the march of Freedom on America's watch - is Syria listening? Is Iran? Will Egypt reform? Who knows, but I'd rather have a President that is willing to challenge them to do so instead of letting them stay in their slavish despotism. Biased media? What biased media? Some headlines from
this morning's papers: And you thought you could ignore punctuation in English class. Ladies and Gentlemen, SFC Paul Smith - You may remember my support for Marines Peralta and Dunham in re: the Medal of Honor for their self sacrifice of jumping on live grenades. I touched briefly in the Peralta post about another nomination, SFC Smith. It was reported yesterday in the St. Petersburg Times that President Bush will present the Medal of Honor to Paul's wife, Birgit, sometime in March. Fedora tip to Blackfive for being the first blogger to get my attention on the story. Be sure to check out the well-done interactive special report by the SPT. The Star-Spangled Necklace This Honor from many is reserved for a few A necklace of blue, thirteen stars in a field, Paul Smith is a hero, genuine and rare He sacrificed his life for his brothers in war
