January 26th, 2005 Victory At Albertson's - The self-checkout station and I had another duel yesterday. I won, mainly because I had only six items and the people before me in line had left behind the coupons the dispenser had given them. It's the small things that matter. Unknown Blog - Peachwater, TX. A photoblogger and commentator. Nice work behind the lens. Questions still being taken - Interview me! Please! Send questions to jenlarson - at - gmail - dot - com. Make them anonymous, I'll answer them as soon as I get them. Words and Deeds - An e-mailer chastised me for yesterday's endorsement of the thank you card. Basically it was better, in his opinion, to support them directly instead of only with words. True enough, but words count too. You know the big bloggers care when - they take time to respond to your e-mails. I wrote a suggestion to one of the top bloggers the other day (you probably read him daily) and he bothered to mention the subject in today's entry. But he also wrote back. Is there any other media outlet that does the same? Not that I know of. Following the crowds, or not - A current meme in blogging right now is the top 20 blogs you read. I haven't posted on it because the ones I read are the ones in my blogroll. I thought that's what its for. Silly me. The pattern of life is to reproduce - The term 'neoconservative' is disorienting. 'neo' means new and 'conservative' means (essentially) traditionalist. If a neocon, as I understand the term, is someone who advocates a Theodore Roosevelt approach to foreign policy but with a slightly louder voice, then why is it a slur? The traditional conservative viewpoint is that America should stick to America and leave well enough alone in foreign affairs. To the extent that this matches what the Founding Fathers believed this is good, but it lacks for vision. George W. Bush declared in his 2nd Inaugural the traditionalist view to be dead. America needed that view for a time, but that time is long past. Our history speaks to freedom by agreeing with it, internalizing it, cultivating it, and most recently, advocating it. Now the time has come to spread it while continuing to improve it at home. We agreed with it when we became a nation. We internalized it, really took it to heart, when we abolished slavery. We cultivated it when we gave women and blacks the vote in the early and mid-20th century. We advocated it in the Cold War, though with a degree of resignation for those lands to whom we could exert no influence. Now the time has come for America to reproduce itself throughout the world. Freedom is the greatest gift ever given to Humanity, and the greatest protector of it is the United States of America. All life, whether animal, human, or plant, goes through three stages: conception, growth & development, and maturity & reproduction. They must happen sequentially, and further stages cannot happen unless earlier stages are continued. We never stop growing. The United States has grown into a country that extends its freedoms to all its citizens. These freedoms are clearly defined, and have clear responsibilities. There is no reason we should not give the opportunity for those freedoms to those who do not now have them. Some give the excuse that certain people can't handle freedom because of their culture. This is outright bigotry. Some make the excuse that it would cost us too much money and too much blood. This is sheer cowardice. Some make the excuse that it is not in our tradition. This is blatant denial. I feel the time has come to take the next logical step in American history, and George W. Bush understands that step. We should not stay the same at home - we should embrace more freedom coupled to responsibility - and history will judge us poorly if we keep such a precious gift to ourselves while others suffer under a yoke never intended in God's plan for them. We have reached a point in time where our gifts and capabilities compel us to act. We have made our stand in the past. It is time to take our stride. |
