January 25th, 2005

Frustrations and Discombobulations - I discovered yesterday that I somehow lost the January 19th copy of the blog. Oops. Somehow I copied the 18th over as the 19th. I forgot completely what I wrote, except the Unknown Blog (My brother in law). The Blogroll has been updated to include his and other blogs I've linked. I apologize for any loss you may feel, but I recommend, if you do feel loss, you seek professional help immediately. It's just a blog entry.

The Interview Continues - Ask Jen (not the wife) your questions about me. Send them to jenlarson - at - gmail - dot - com by noon Central time on Thursday, I'll make my responses as witty as possible.

Marquis de Lafayette stamp, US, 3 centsMarie-Joseph-Paul-Roch-Yves-Gilbert du Motier, marquis de La Fayette is a Frenchman I can like: personally humble and supportive of America. When he first heard of the American Revolution he jumped at the chance to help, and through a series of events where he almost didn't make it to America he eventually managed to secure a commission of Major General from Congress by insisting on volunteer status and foregoing pay. Congress sent him to General Washington to be assigned at his discretion. Reportedly the young (19 years old) General greeted Washington saying "I have come to learn", or words to that effect. He went on to take part in the battles of Brandywine (1777), Monmouth (1778), and Yorktown (1781). His wounding at Brandywine would qualify him, under today's rules, for the Purple Heart - putting his commanding officer in the place where Lafayette had him already, right over his heart. His service in battle would also give him, by the same rules for ribbons and decorations, an American Revolution Campaign ribbon with two battle stars.

The United States has a very peculiar honor we bestow upon certain individuals. The title of Honorary Citizen of the United States has been given to only six individuals. Lafayette is one of them.

Support the troops? - Some don't, you can. I signed for Jen & I. Fedora Tip: Comissar

Remember the end of Top Gun? - The flying off into the sunset scene has come: The Tomcat's Final Flight. A sad but necessary end to a long and glorious career. Unfortunately, the replacement does not look like it will have the grace of beauty the Tomcat has.
