January 18th, 2005 Good things come in incremental packages - The DNS server for the work connection is somewhat back in order - I can read Lileks now. I still can't get to APOD, and I can't get to TEP to pay my electric bill. Grrr. Distributed reporting as the future of news - It's amazing how the Blogosphere is connecting puzzle pieces. Yesterday Captain Ed posted a story about how domestic terrorists (a.k.a. street gangs) are producing DVD videos designed to intimidate witnesses against them. Also late yesterday LGF posted a story about how a cousin of the murdered family of Coptic Christians is a translator for the prosecution in the case against Lynn Stewart. That case accuses Stewart, a lawyer, of passing notes in class from Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman (of WTC attack 1 fame) to terrorist cells. I wonder if the officers investigating the murders might put these two ideas together.
I'm not bitter. Seriously, I'm not. God didn't want me in the Air Force and it took most of my college freshman year to figure that out for myself. But I'm glad I eventually listened, because if I hadn't I would not have married Jennifer when I did. Furthermore, the officers aren't really all that bad. I toured the place my high school junior year, to get an idea of what it was like there. The chapel is grand and beautiful, and the grounds are immaculately maintained. You can't walk five yards without bumping into an airplane monument. They have, as I remember, not less than five. I didn't get pictures of all of them, and you can smack the young high scholar for not taking pictures of the Academy Chapel. I got pictures of the deer. Since the grounds are a federal installation you can't hunt there without the base commander's permission. For obvious reasons it is not given, so the deer are completely fearless. You can get within mere feet of a Blacktail (a.k.a. Mule) Deer and snap a picture. As long as you don't use flash you won't scare them away. They make a big deal out of one of their graduates. Rightly so. Big Media makes a big fuss over hazing at the Academies, particularly in regards to hazing of women. I didn't see any examples of sexual harassment when I visited, but one example of sanctioned hazing is the tile path. The parade ground is tiled in concrete but around the outside border is a differently colored tile path. All freshman (or fourth-class cadets, properly) must stay on the path when traveling to and fro across campus. The only exceptions are when the squadrons are on parade. The purpose is to teach them time management, since they have to account for adequate travel time in their daily schedules. Of course, its not a male-female thing, its just a low-cadet-on-the-totem-pole thing. Blog notes - I switched over to using shtml and file includes as the basic template for the site, which makes management a little easier. If you not any difficulties, please let me know. Things that make you go hmmm - New Sisyphus has one post - ONE - and he has already been announced on both LGF and the Diplomad. What's it take to climb out of the Crunchy Crustacean area of the Blogosphere? |
