A thought occurred to me
yesterday. "Long Carbine of Reason" is one of Hugh Hewitt's
self-professed descriptive titles. Does he realize that a "Long
Carbine" is just a regular rifle? Today's unknown blog showcase is Hamilton's Pamphlets. Good stuff. Why do we do things the way we do? Why do we have things like Congressional certifications and Senatorial hearings on Cabinet secretaries? It's so that a modicum of agreement can be fostered in the political atmosphere. Without agreement we cannot move from one idea to another, from one milepost to the next. At some point in a democratic republic unity must be found, or there shall be no progress. A lack of unity undermines our union. That being said the display yesterday in the Joint Session while election results certification was occurring was disgusting. Senator Boxer and Representative Jones should be ashamed of themselves for attacking the thread of agreement that remains in Congress. "This objection does not have at its root the hope or even the hint of overturning or challenging the victory of the president," according to the Representative - but then why file it in the first place? If you want to correct voting irregularities, as they claim, draw up a bill and submit it in both chambers. You can start by creating a national standard for voter identification, so as to prevent dead people from voting. Despite what the Seattle Times implies, its wrong. Andrew Sullivan has thrown down a gauntlet. Of Bush and the Gonzales nomination he writes:
We are not troubled by the executions in Texas because there is a difference between opposing innocent bloodshed and executing someone who has committed murder. Every death sentence is appealed. He claims that Bush did not carefully review each case, yet provides no support for his claim. He uses the term "glibly", but the only thing glib is his accusation that Bush is a cold-hearted cutthroat. As for the torture issue, the interpretation provided by Gonzales' office is that anything short of stopping a major organ from functioning is legal. Remember, Congress wrote the law, no court has ruled on it, and someone had to interpret it. If Senators Kennedy and Durbin think Gonzo interpreted it badly, perhaps they should have been a bit more clear in their legislation. As to the allegation of legal sanction, no sanction from the White House, official or otherwise, written or otherwise, has yet been found. Earlier Sullivan writes
Mudville's not ignoring purported evidence, he's examining that which has been presented and reiterating facts. Yet Sullivan claims there is evidence of torture "in Ramadi, Tikrit, in Saddam's old mukhabbarat HQ in Basra, at Camp Cropper, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and in transit". Really? What is this evidence, Andrew? Surely it exists somewhere out there in one of the great big Internets. Surely you know of a link or two that has photos and sworn testimony. Or are you just confusing evidence with accusation? Sullivan accuses Bush of giving the wink and nod to torture, yet he cannot name any Army, Air Force, Marine, or Navy officer or enlistee who followed a torture order, nor can he show any order, written or oral and sworn with testimony, that advocates, acknowledges, or demands torture. He's beating a dead horse named Abu Ghraib, and the horse isn't moving. I'll admit that I only read Sullivan infrequently, when at all, so I might be missing something he's posted. But if this is the type of "journalism" the Blogosphere wants to admire and replace the NY Times with, we have a long road ahead of us. But then again, the Blogosphere is more about editorial than news reporting, and you're allowed factual errors in that medium. Even if it makes you look like an idiot. One final note: how do you feel about seeing ads in the right hand column? Let me know. |
