So Gonzo starts the Senate confirmation process today. The Democrats are going to try and Bork his confirmation by asking for letters he cannot legally release and making it look like he's the obstructionist. So much for bipartisanship. Let's remember some things about these memos and the GWOT:

  • Gonzales did not write them
  • He can't do much more than promise he won't support torture
  • Al Qaeda fighters are not POWs - they do not meet the Geneva Convention definition (see Article 4, section A, part 2, sub parts a-d).

The speculation about the status is in regards to what constitutes a volunteer corps. Regardless, they do not conduct "their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war".

Just remember that when someone says we shouldn't administer sodium pentothal to extract information.

As regards the ethnic origin of the candidate, there are many on the right accusing the Democrats of being bigoted against Hispanics and Blacks. I don't see that. I see them being bigoted against the right-wing ideology and standards, which is just stupid.

Still, you have to wonder about the severe dearth of pigment in the upper leadership of their party...

Wondering what happened to Diego Garcia in the tsunami? Wonder no more.

"Favorable ocean topography minimized the tsunami's impact on the atoll," the navy said on its Web site.

Diego Garcia is part of the Chagos Archipelago and lies west of the Chagos Trench, an underwater canyon that is 643 kilometers, or 400 miles, long and that runs north and south and plunges to a depth of more than 5,000 meters, or 16,400 feet, in some areas. It is one of the deepest regions of the Indian Ocean.

"The depth of the Chagos Trench and grade to the shores does not allow for tsunamis to build before passing the atoll," the navy said.

It would have been really bad if we had lost that island.

Today's unknown blog showcase is The Wardrobe Door. He likes C. S. Lewis. He also likes Macs. Oh well, take the good with the bad.

Its very cold in the Old Pueblo. The virtual thermometer reads 48°, which is miserably frozen for us. As always, the rain is forecast for a week from now or so, but this time it might actually come.

Today's rifle linkage is more about the Krag. Be sure to check out the exploded view.
