After we cleaned the bathroom last night Jen & I went out with the binocs and spied Comet Macholtz just a little south of the Pleiades. You had to know where to look and what to look for, otherwise it looked just like any other indistinguishable fuzzy.

That's the funny thing about optical astronomy. Looking through the eyepiece of a telescope it is rather hard to distinguish between something like M13 and M51, but once captured on film or CCD the results are nothing short of astounding. Colors jump out that weren't distinguishable before. Filaments, tails, arms, and other unseen oddities become seen. It makes me wonder what the first astrophotographers thought when they developed their films. Did they realize they were paving the way for grand advances in astronomy? Science is dependent on recorded data - if you can't go back and measure it, you might as well have not observed it in the first place. Without those photographs we wouldn't have been able to do most of the space-related things we did last century.

I want to highlight a blog I found yesterday: American Soldier, online since 12July2004, now blogrolled at MM.net. He's a sniper who just left for final training before Iraq deployment. Pray for him.

Speaking of snipers, today's "I Love the Jarheads" link is to a story about Sgt. Herbert Hancock, who is probably the sniper in Iraq with the longest confirmed kill. Range: 1,050 yards. And with an M40 - a "meager" .308" caliber weapon, not the big .50! Fedora tip: Blackfive

There's something about those Marine snipers whose last names start with "Ha" and end with "cock".

I'm sure the Democratic Underground had a stroke when they saw this headline.

There's nothing quite as satisfying as a former senator's dead domain.

Speaking of the new and improved Congress, there's lots of talk about their domestic agenda for the next year. W wants tort law and Social "Security" reformed. Democrats want tax and spending hikes but know they'll only get the latter. I want Social "Security" reform and another two divisions for the Army, a 400 ship Navy, and a close to the base closings. Somehow I think that no one is going to get what they want.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it...

For your perusing: The Krag Rifle, a sample of which is available at a local gun shop, which I am considering. More later.
