Top Ten War Movies

The Donovan has a list of his top war movies going. Mine, in no particular order, and limited to movies I've seen.

  • Blackhawk Down
  • Patton
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Das Boot
  • Enemy At The Gates
  • The Great Escape
  • Stalag 17
  • Gettysburg
  • Gods and Generals
  • Glory

Honorable Mentions

  • Horatio Hornblower series on A&E
  • Tora! Tora! Tora!
  • Red Dawn
  • The Four Feathers (with Heath Ledger)
  • The Longest Day
  • Braveheart

Documentaries

  • The World At War (BBC)
  • The Civil War (Ken Burns)

The thing about war movies is anyone can film people pretending to kill each other. The ones that make watching it a worthwhile experience are the ones that make it seem like you're really there.

The Lost Batallion is surprisingly good.
Master and Commander was enjoyable, from a Napoleanic war perspective.

As if Office Space (oh wait, that is more of my own PERSONAL war)

There are others for realistic combat conditions.
Pork Chop Hill
The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Lost Battallion

Three others from a historical perspective:
Battle Cry
Sergent York
Away All Boats

Pork Chop Hill is about the latter stages of the Korean War.
The Sands of Iwo Jima shows the Marines in the Pacific amphibious landings. It also had the three surviving members of the flag raising on Mt Suribachi in the flag raising scenes.
The Lost Battallion is from the A&E Channel starring Rick Schroeder and is about an American Battallion in WWI in the Battle of the Ardennes and separated from the main assault.
Battle Cry is about the Battle of the Bulge.
Sergent York is about Alvin York, the Medal of Honor Winner in WWI. It also has the most accurate portrayal of a person accepting Christ I have ever seen in a movie. It should also be sent to John Kerry to show how a real hero acts after returning home.
Away All Boats is about an amphibious landing ship in WWII and the Battle of Okinawa, including the viscious aerial assault on the invasion fleet.
