 Clinton's lying again. Go figure.
From Bill Clinton's convention speech last night: Republicans believe in an America run by the right people, their people, in a world in which we act unilaterally when we can, and cooperate when we have to. Except that's not what we believe, and its not what George Bush has been saying. We have been saying we will act unilaterally when we have to, and cooperate when we can. Or, as George Bush so eloquently puts it, This particular criticism is hard to explain to our partners in Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, the Netherlands, Norway, El Salvador, and the 17 other countries that have committed troops to Iraq. As we debate at home, we must never ignore the vital contributions of our international partners, or dismiss their sacrifices. And people think he's stupid and lacks wit.
A telling moment in Clinton's speech came right before the above sentence: We think the role of government is to give people the tools and conditions to make the most of their lives. But how does the government obtain those tools and conditions to hand out in the first place? Except through usurpation and taxation, I know of no method, so why have the middleman? The government cannot create anything original in our country unless it first takes from its citizens. If it is going to give right back to the citizenry, why take it in the first place? Republicans believe that it is the role of the citizen to create the tools to take advantage of the conditions in their lives in order to make the most of them. Anything less than that is an imperfect freedom, or at least less than ideal. Government is there to prevent bad things from happening to you and encourage you to do good things.
