07/27/2004 Entry: "WATB? Guam, again"

Where are the Bombers?
WATB? Guam, again

The B-2s from Whiteman have deployed again. To Guam.

The exercise required 509ers to deploy to Andersen and support several long duration sorties. During the weeklong training, B-2s departed from Whiteman, landed at Andersen, the aircrew changed and the B-2s continued long duration sorties back to Whiteman. Crews flew 20-hour missions and B-2 engines ran for over 40 hours while the aircraft spent minimal time on the ground.
We don't have another plane in our inventory that can run for more than 40 hours straight. I don't think the B-52s are able to do this, but if they can its more a testament to design and maintenance than anything else. We need more B-2s. Fortunately, their cost would not be as steep this time, since there would be no development costs associated with the purchase. 16 bombers, I feel, is not enough to support the war we are committed to. Unfortunately I don't think the current atmosphere in Congress would allow for them.
"It is vital to deploy and operate from our forward operating locations," said Lt. Col. Paul Tibbets, 325th Bomb Squadron Director of Operations and deployment commander.
Tibbets? Apparently, he's related to the pilot of the Enola Gay.
