07/20/2004 Entry: "Moon Shots"

History
Moon Shots

Today is the 35th anniversary of the first moon landing. I find it a bit ironic that I completely forgot about it until I heard it talked about on the Hugh Hewitt show, despite thumbing through Robert Goddard's book at lunchtime.

There are only a handful of men who rank with Dr. Goddard when it comes to laying the foundation for space travel. The two that come to mind are Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Werner von Braun. Jules Verne might count, but only on the lists of others. Oh, and don't forget the Romanian-German Hermann Oberth.

We've come a long way as a travelling race. Literally, given the distances involved in spaceflight.

I have a copy of the Greensboro Daily News (NC) from that date back in 1969. In addition to the many pages on the moon landing is a tiny blurb on Ted Kennedy's little Chappaquiddick incident, which happened on the evening of July 18. Happy 35th Driving-Your-Olds-Off-A-Bridge Day, Ted!

Why do I have the feeling that if history repeated itself with another moon-shot and another up-and-coming senator drowning a woman because of his drunken stupor, the news coverage would be reversed from what it was 35 years ago?
