Kerry's Mate

I'm confused. John Kerry comes out supporting civil unions. John Edwards, his (running) mate, opposes same-sex marriage. Then a photo like this comes out:

They don't need to alienate the middle by kissing in public.

Seriously, folks, why would John Kerry think that choosing someone in the "middle" would win the middle for him if he's a left wing liberal? Everyone knows that the Vice President has two real responsibilities: to break ties in the Senate and take over if necessary. He does not set policy, the President does. If there's a tie in the Senate, the VP gets a vote, but he represents the Chief Exec, and therefore, the Chief's policy.

Not his own.

Lets assume that Edwards is in the middle, as the Left claims he is. If he needs to take over from Kerry his differences with the President would presumably cause changes in policy, since Kerry is a die hard, core leftist. Why would we willingly vote for a situation that would cause instability in public policy? But then again, he's not really in the middle.

Edwards supports abortion. That is a leftist position.

Edwards was a plaintiff attorney before running for the Senate. Opposition to tort reform is a leftist position.

He opposed the Vietnam War. That was a leftist position.

He opposed repealing the Marriage Penalty in the tax code. That is a leftist position.

I don't see how Edwards is in the middle.

Did Kerry expect to use Edwards to bring in North Carolina? If so, his hopes are faint. The Democrats haven't carried NC since 1976. Did they expect to bring in the moderate republicans? If so, one need only look at his voting record to see he's not so moderate. Did he expect to strengthen his apparent weakness in foreign policy? If so, he should have chosen someone with actual experience. Even if you didn't like Bush initially because he had no foreign experience, you have to admit that his VP choice was of far higher quality, since it strengthened his weakness.

Edwards, as I see things, weakens Kerry's chances for winning. Kerry is just showing his poor decision making skills, and should not be elected.
