Open Discussion: Democracy vs. Republic

Inspired by a question Jennifer asked her government class today, I pose it here on this forum:

Since we have the technology to make it work, argue for or against a "true" democracy as opposed to a republic.

Comment below, please keep it clean. I'm for the republic.

Lordy, that gives me chills just thinking about it. There are so many brainless lemmings in this country that a true democracy should scare any conscientious citizen who has real political convictions. These goobers are too busy taking their freedom for granted, reading "People" and worrying about their weekend schedule to develop any real feelings about important issues or learn the facts. They will believe anything if you run enough commercials telling them it's true. Look at the way election poll numbers sway to and fro depending on who's been running ads. I'll take the republic, thankyouverymuch. Extra pickles and hold the activist judges, please.

I agree with Matt Maynard, and Matt Maynard. (There is Two of them!)

Anyways. The way I see it, Virtual Democracy has a lot of "unknowns". How will your peers across the country vote on a particular issue?
"Virtual Democracy" would be ideal in a small population, like a business, or a workgroup, but on a large or even collossal scale, its looms of anarchy. (And you think its hard to keep up with the latest fashion?) Politics would become trendy.
We need leaders, and leaders need to be held accountable, in large societies like the United States.

Besides, anyone who has played Civilization knows that the Republic is where its at!
