Gay "Marriage"

Well, two old females got "married" in California today. The Mayor of San Francisco approved of the act and explained her actions in overseeing the "ceremony". It is interesting to note the tacit note of rebellion in the letter comes out in the list of copy recipients at the bottom. Arnold Schwarzenegger, GOVERNOR, is not on the list. Most of the other necessary state officials are though.

Interesting.

So, does the Governator then step in and raise hell or does he sit on his hands?

IANAL, but I'm pretty sure the mayor is usurping the state "power" to issue marriage licenses, since that (to my knowledge) is a state document, not a municipal one. Yeah, I do think he should take a stand, for the following reasons: 1) the licenses are null & void, and it is his responsibility to uphold the law, and 2) it would clearly identify where he stands on the issue. Too many times politicians fail to give us reason to vote for or against them because they are ambiguous. They should take firm stands.

Will he? Given his constituency and stand on domestic issues, probably not.

As for the state's authority to issue marriage licenses, that is the subject for another essay. Sneak peek at the series: An alphabet of political beliefs, or, Why I vote the way I do: Homosexuality.
