Damn you, George Lucas, damn you!
Star Wars 4, 5, & 6 headed for the DVD player
While the long-held rumor was that George Lucas would wait until the completion of Star Wars Episode III, due in theaters in May 2005, to release the original trilogy on DVD, Lucasfilm VP of Market Jim Ward revealed today that Lucas "found some time" in his schedule and "was willing and eager to make it happen."
Translation: Lucas was willing and eager to make a quick buck because he realized geeks would line up for blocks to get episodes 4-6, then do it again when the 1-6 box set came out, so he made time to do so.
Now the only question is: do I satisfy my fastidious side and wait until the crap episodes come out, or do I get the good stuff and tell my children that episodes 1-3 never existed, so as to preserve their (presumably) good perception of Star Wars?

The best bet: Wait on the word on Episode 3, and decide then.
You waited this long, you can wait a little longer.

Indeed.
Though the truth about Episodes 1-3 (making the outlandish assumption that 3 will resemble 1 and 2) will suffice.
The truth about episodes 1-3:
The "first" three episodes were made between one and two decades and heaven knows how many ILM films later than the "last" three. Consequently the two triads are not justifiably comparable.
I'll leave you to fill in the rest.

Justifiably comparable? Certainly not from a special effects perspective, 1-3 being better. From a writing perspective, certainly. Episodes 1-3 (while making many assumptions about 3) are on a much lower level than episodes 4-6. That's not to say 4-6 are on par with Casablanca (the best movie ever), or any of my other top picks. 4-6 all are from the hero epic class of movies, which have a special place in my heart. 1-3 are, well, hard for me to label. They are certainly action stories, but they seem to put more emphasis on the action to cover up a plot and lines that just don't satisfy.
All this talk of what's good and what's bad has gotten me thinking that my current list of top movies is too restrictive. Given the different categories movies fall into, I feel another, more extensive, posting coming on.

I have been squelched.
