Amtrak to the government: give us the loot so we can give it back to you

Amtrak president derides funding proposal

Amtrak formally asked for $1.798 billion, or about $300 million more than it received for 2004. That includes a $570 million operating subsidy, repayment of a $100 million government loan ...
Huh?

The Congress gave them a "loan" a while ago, and then they ask Congress for money to pay back the loan? Damn, I wish mortgages worked like that. Only in government can such assinine bookkeeping be considered normal operating procedure.

BTW, GWB offered them $900 million, which the Amtrak prez said would shut down the line. And people deride Bush for being a big spender. He is, but when he says 'no', he does sound like an office mafia king, doesn't he?
Office Mafia: "Half a danish, half a folder."
George Bush: "Half a train service, half a budget."
