On Madonna & Wes Clark

Madonna, in a letter to Clark supporters:

Our greatest risk is not terrorism, and it's not Iraq or the "Axis of Evil." Our greatest risk is a lack of leadership, a lack of honesty and a complete lack of consciousness. Unfortunately our current government cannot see the big picture. They think too small. They suffer from the "what's in it for me?" syndrome. The simple truth is that the current administration has squandered incredible opportunities to bring the world together, to promote peace in regions that have only known war, to encourage health in places that are ravaged with disease, to make us more secure by living up to our principles at home and abroad. The simple truth is that the policies of our current administration do not reflect what is great about America.
Can anyone honestly support a candidate also supported by someone who believes that terrorism is not our greatest threat? Of course they can, it depends on the candidate's views, not the views of the supporters.

But what attracts such kooky viewpoints to this particular candidate, or any of the Demoratic candidates in general?

As for her accusations against George W. Bush, lets address them point by point:

  • A lack of leadership: GWB successfully lead 40-something countries against the bloodiest dictator in the Middle East. Wes Clark was asked to resign his command.
  • To call GWB a liar is to ignore the entire statement he is accused of deceiving us with. He attributed the statement about Iraq's pursuit of yellowcake to British Intelligence, a statement the Brits stand by.
  • GWB is conscious. The fact that he can make coherent foreign policy decisions is evidence enough. As an example of "a complete lack of consciousness" perhaps Madonna should examine Uday and Qusay Hussein and the circumstances that lead to their, ahem, unresponsiveness.
  • His governance shows he sees the big picture, as evidenced in his diplomatic and military assault against not just those who sponsored Sept. 11th, but also those who agree with that lifestyle.
  • The fact that GWB is willing to deal with Terrorism now and not later shows that his is not just interested in "what's in it for him", but also for the next generation of Americans, so they will not have to live in fear of foreign attacks on our land.
  • You cannot blame the division France caused in the UN on GWB. If the world is not together on terrorism the fault can hardly be laid at GWB's feet. He has extended every possible opportunity for other nations to join us and continues to do so.
  • GWB has promoted "peace in regions that have only known war" by removing the dictators who are obstacles to peace. Perhaps Madonna hasn't noticed the peace that is breaking out in Iraq because she hasn't noticed that US casualty rates are actually dropping.
  • GWB has encouraged "health in places that are ravaged with disease" by promoting support for abstinence programs in Africa, to slow and stop the spread of AIDS, not to mention support for AIDS drugs on that continent. Not to mention the health and welfare improvements now being made in Afganistan and Iraq.
  • GWB has made "us more secure by living up to our principles at home and abroad" because he believes in and supports liberty for both Americans and foreigners. Those who complain that we are not putting Taliban/Al-Qaeda fighters on trial should go back and read the Constitution, which does not obligate us to extend the rights of Americans to foreigners. If we do, they are all the better for it, and if we don't, so what? They took up arms against us, they're lucky to be alive.
  • "The simple truth is that the policies of our current administration" reflect GWB's view that America is the greatest force for good currently on the planet.

If Madonna finds enough of her own beliefs, as quoted above, in Wes Clark, anyone interested in stopping Terrorism should wonder at Clark's ability to wage war against it. Especially since he was asked to resign his command.
