The Best Films Ever

Most blogs have such a list, and since I can't find most of my favorites on the lists of others, I'll put them here. There is no particular order, since different types of film can rank at similar levels, but I'll list them all the same.

  • Casablanca - The. Best. Movie. Ever. Shows the French for what they are and makes a memorable character choose between what's preferable for him and what he knows to be right. Source of lines like "Round up the usual suspects", "'I'm shocked, SHOCKED, to find that gambling is going on in here.' - 'Your winnings, sir'", and "Here's looking at you, kid".
  • One Two Three - James Cagney's last work for close to 30 years. Comedy with Coca-Cola, Communism, and clever Cagney Conundrums.
  • Arsenic and Old Lace - Cary Grant tries to hide the fact that his insane family also happens to be a pack of serial murderers.
  • It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World - Human nature at its self-serving worst, portrayed in slapstick comedy.
  • Saving Private Ryan - War as it really is, coupled to a mission of mercy for the sake of mom back home.
  • Tombstone - The most historically accurate portrayal of the gunfight at the OK Corral. A man's movie in every sense of the word.
  • The Great Escape - My favorite Steve McQueen movie. He rides a motorcycle while James Garner pilfers half of the Nazi prison camp. Throw in James Coburn and Charles Bronson and it is like a Magnificent Seven reunion.
  • The Matrix - Not the sequel abominations that followed. The original is still the best. Just think: The W. Brothers put in a great plug for Christianity and didn't realize how great it was until after this sleeper became the box office smash. Maybe they felt obligated to ruin that sense of evangelism.
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - Pure fiction from start to end, but the Nazis are beat and a father and son are reconciled. It even requires a leap of faith.
  • Back to the Future - A fun comedy that entertains and makes you think about cause and effect (or sowing and reaping) at the same time.
