Computers, Chess, and War

Opinion Journal has a good article today on Computers, Chess, and Garry Kasparov. He's playing this week against X3D Fritz, the current champion of the computer chess programs. A choice quote:

In times gone by, when an opponent sacrificed a piece to launch an attack, it was considered dishonorable not to capture the sacrificed piece. Today, the decision whether to accept a sacrifice is made not on the basis of "honor," but after an attempt to carefully calculate the consequences of taking the offered piece or declining to.
In that regard, chess is like warfare: sacrifices on the battlefield are no longer matters of honor, and indeed haven't been since about Gettysburg in 1863. Both chess and war have gotten rougher and less glorious of late.
