10/22/2003 Entry: "The Jihad against websites?"

The Jihad against websites?

Perhaps you've heard about the recent attacks against various pro-Israeli weblogs out there. Apparently, there is lots of accusation and some evidence that it was done by a muslim group in the South Pacific region that was intentionally targeting said blogs. I'm reminded of Victor Laszlo in Casablanca:

What if you murdered all of us? From every corner of your Republic, thousands would rise to take our places. Even Nazis can't kill that fast.
Lileks (James) had something to say about it as well, about halfway down the page.

Personally? If the accusations are true (and I see no reason why they wouldn't be) it would be not at all surprising that jihad was being waged on the Internet. But does a group of muslims think that shutting down a very popular pro-Israeli website or two does anything to further their cause for a Palestinian state when their brothers in arms are blowing up civilians in cafes? Do they think they will get sympathy and support from the United States, or anyone who is not already antisemitic?

[Editor's note: The incoherent screed from a commenter self-identified as "Samed" (i.p. address 80.40.0.13) has been deleted. Antisemitic comments of the type "Palestinians have no choice other than bomb belts..." are not welcome here. This is a benevolent dictatorship, emphasis on dictatorship - Maynard]
