Get Informed, Then Get Your Ballot

You've seen how I'm voting on the propositions. Here's how I'm voting on the individual offices. Warning: people with easily offended democratic party tendencies may be offended by the following posting. Reader discretion is advised.

Most of my information for choosing who to vote for is take from The Center for Arizona Policy. Every election year they send out a questionaire to the different candidates with a list of questions. The candidate is supposed to mark Support, Oppose, or Undecided, and they are allowed to leave comments. The results are then tallied and listed in a non-partisan way, i.e. each candidate's answers are given directly, with no pressure put on the reader to vote one way or another when they examine the answers. Looking over the listing of who responded, I noticed a definite lack of response from most of the Democratic candidates. How do they ever expect to win my vote if they do not state their position clearly through question-answer sessions? Via fraud? I hope not.

I have litmus tests on certain issues. For instance, a candidate must be pro-life in order to win my vote. Anything less is unacceptable. On other issues I'm more flexible. For instance, I don't care if the state mine inspector is pro-criminal (a.k.a. anti-gun), but I do care about the governor's stand on the issue. Likewise for issues related to education; the superintendent should be in favor of vouchers, but I don't really care about their position on gambling as long as they keep it out of the schools.

There are several partisan candidates listed on the ballot who were not sent a questionaire by the CAP. In these cases, I decided to vote Republican for one simple reason: I doubt the ability of anyone to govern who registers with a party that does not respect the need for government officials to obey the law. If you didn't leave the Democratic party after Bill Clinton, don't expect my vote.

Anyway, this is how I've decided to vote.
