Matt Hancock is in Heaven
Heaven on Earth, that is. Matt is a former roomate, and he was married to Sharon Robinette this past Saturday. He gave me the honor of being one of his groomsmen, which was a first for me. I was glad to be part of it.
First, the goodies. All the groomsmen got knives, like this one:
Men, if you are wondering what to get your own groomsmen for your wedding, remember: fire (torches) and steel (knives) are hard to beat. The ringbearer was Matt’s new nephew, and we made jokes about him being Frodo and needing a blade named Sting, like what we had all just received.
The event was a fundamentally spiritual one. Marriage involves death, which far too many people ignore. The death is of yourself, and is done for the sake of your spouse. As I watched Matt through his engagement, he experienced a lot of death: death to selfish ways, childish ways, and downright moronic and offensive ways. He is indeed a new creation.
But Matt doesn’t really exist anymore. ‘Matt’ is now ‘Matt & Sharon’, and they are as inseparable as two people can become. That is not empty boasting or vain bragging. They were knit together by the power of Jesus Christ, and the Power of God that brought them to salvation also put them together as man and wife. It was a wonderful thing to witness, and I’m glad that God put me with Matt as a roomate for five and a half years.
