So I wake up this morning and open my blogroll for my news feed. There’s the normal stuff at the likes of Blackfive and Castle Aarrgh!, so I think nothing is amiss. Then Drudge comes up. Apparently, the Brits foiled a plot by the terrorists to blow up several planes in midair over the Atlantic. Good morning!
At least Lileks had a good birthday.
Reuters: We’re at red alert for inbound flights from the UK, and orange everywhere else. This exposes a flaw in the alert system – we’ve only had to implement it piecemeal, raising it in parts while the rest of the country stays normal. How can we revise it to send out more accurate news than what is currently implemented? For example, my little alerter says we’re still at yellow, but we’re not, at least not wholly. How do we fix this?
Fox News:
Two U.S. counterterrorism officials said the terrorists had targeted United Airlines, American Airlines and Continental Airlines.
Why do they continue to target United and American? Is it just because their names are so like the US, or is it because they are seen as more vulnerable than others?
Romney to activate National Guard for Logan Airport. There he goes, building his Presidential credentials for 2008. He’ll need them, as President Bush’s policies have prevented him from getting the experience Rudy Giuliani has.
Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff: Leave the liquids, hairgels, and lotions behind. This gives an indication of how they planned to trigger the bombs.
If this whole thing sounds familiar, you’ve been paying attention to the news. Oplan Bojinka was a similar plan, foiled in 1995. This indicates that terrorists are willing to try anything more than once, which (from their perspective) makes sense, if they feel they can pull it off.
Finally, to close, a few choice quotes apt for the news:
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. (can’t remember who said it, too lazy to go find out)
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. – George Orwell
