B(rew)logging: Kit Peak Oatmeal Stout

April 10th, 2006 No comments

This is becoming a very fun habit. We bought another kit this past Saturday, one with oatmeal and roasted barley and chocolate grains and the promise of a beer so dark it sucks in light from around the bar. It would make an Irishman cry, or at least that’s what I’m lead to believe from the packaging. The hops have an alpha acid of 6.2%, (a number where the higher it is, the hoppier it is) and I’m looking forward to tasting this in a few weeks.

The temperature wouldn’t get low enough to pitch the yeast, so we set up an evaporative cooler gadget. It’s just a plastic bin in which we put the fermenter (with the wort in it), and put a wet towel over it, with the ends of the towel resting in water in the bottom of the bin. We set a fan to blow over it, and this lowered the temperature quite a bit.

We shall see how it turns out in about two weeks or so.
