Egads, I’ve created a monster

May 31st, 2005 No comments

Well, the upgrade from WP 1.2 to 1.5 went apparently well. The theme looks better, in my opinion, but it still needs tweaking so it doesn’t look like a hideous outcast from Cupertino, land of the non-edible Apples.

More coming later…

Memorial Day 2005

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today we honor primarily those who gave their lives in the last full measure of devotion to freedom that can be given. However, I would like to honor one particular person who contributed to the WW2 effort in a small but useful way, came home, and lived his life quietly & peacefully until his death.

Harry Keith Maynard, Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd class, USN.

He was my grandfather, and he died two years before I was born. Read more…

Gun of the week – The M91 Mauser-Paravicino

May 30th, 2005 No comments

Mauser-Paravicino Rifle

This rifle is also known as the Mannlicher-Carcano, chambered in 6.5x52mm. The one shown above is the one Lee Harvey Oswald used to kill JFK.

The strange name confusion comes from the Mauser style bolt and the Mannlicher style magazine the rifle uses. The barrel is fairly short – a mere 20.87 inches, though with a 6.5 mm cartridge it doesn’t lose too much energy as the bullet fired can weigh around 160 grains. The overall length is 40 inches, which makes for a somewhat compact rifle. The sights are a simple blade & notch style, though a scope can be attached.

10 reasons not to kill Bush

Sadly, the immorality of it isn’t listed until #10. Illegality isn’t listed at all, though she does make a good point at the end:

I am too often shocked by the vitriolic repulsion many people feel for our leader and America in general, especially because the loathing is often poorly informed. I’ve met people on this campus who see America as the worst human rights abuser in the world (unlike the angelic paradise of Cambodia) and people who sway liberal not because they actually know anything about issues but because it’s popular.

Liberalism has to be more than a college fad or a collection of loudmouths whose idiotic comments stir headlines. The rabid dislike some people feel for a man they’ve never even met makes me ashamed to be a Democrat.

Why can’t people like this be more vocal in their party? I welcome a good discussion, but good discussions come from those who are not driven by anger, like so many in her party.

Too cool for the word “cool”

Jeremy likes Steve McQueen, and with good reason. The man kicked serious @$$ on screen. Now Turner Classic Movies has a sweepstakes going. The grand prize: a Steve McQueen movie collection, a leather jacket, and a Triumph motor-freakin-cycle, the same one he rode in The Great Escape.

Go. Enter. Good luck.

Anniversary Day

May 28th, 2005 No comments

One year ago today, I woke up for the last time as a bachelor.

One year ago today, I vowed before many witnesses that I would be faithful.

One year ago today, I vowed that I would honor my wife as a fellow heir of the grace of life.

Jennifer is my bride, and has been for exactly one year as of today.

You’ve been so nice to come home to, Jennifer, and I’m going to thoroughly enjoy coming home to you for the rest of our lives.

Happy anniversary, Sweetness.

Something new we’ve been concocting

May 27th, 2005 No comments

Today’s alcoholic drink has no name as yet. Comments are open, so feel free to suggest something.

  • 1.5 measures creme de cacao
  • 2.5 measures vodka
  • 1 part vanilla ice cream
  • ice
  • chocolate syrup
  • strawberry for garnish

Crush the ice in a blender. Add the ice cream, vodka, & creme de cacao. Blend together. Drizzle the chocolate syrup into a martini glass, then pour the blended mix into the glass. Garnish & serve.

Again, don’t get drunk. This website is not responsible for your foolishness, only my own.
