Coming early next month: a review of Battle Ready, a poem or two, and observations of the furball that is American Politics. And plenty of gun stuff too.

Of all ignorance, the ignorance of the educated is the most dangerous. Not only are educated people likely to have more influence, they are the last people to suspect that they don’t know what they are talking about when they go outside their narrow fields. – Thomas Sowell, August 12, 2004

{{link http://www.suntimes.com/output/elect/cst-nws-lips28.html John Kerry’s focked}}.

There are only two things that can spare John Kerry from a complete and total meltdown at this point: honesty and repentance. He must publicly answer, with complete candor, the questions posed of his character by the Swift Boat Vets. He must also publicly apologize to every Vietnam Veteran for his {{link http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/004/512cdccw.asp since-disproven lies before the Senate in 1971}}. Only then can we even consider that this guy has any shot whatsoever at the White House.

Today's Windows diatribe is brought to you by the letter GRRRRRR!

Work
{{entrysubject}}

I hate Windows. I came in this morning and found out that my work machine had rebooted spontaneously over the weekend. No log was left behind of what might have caused the problem. The only clue that was to be found was that it had happened on Saturday, just before noon, according to the System Log.

So I logged on and found out that a bunch of stuff that hadn’t been saved to the server was apparently permanently lost.

If Bill Gates owed me a nickel every time his sofware lost my data, I’d have approximately enough to pay his extortionary licensing fees.

The hardest thing in counterterrorism is strike prediction

Terrorism News
{{entrysubject}}

But, given that at least one of the Russian planes lost earlier this week was {{link http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,130302,00.html brought down by terrorism}} and the explosive used was {{link http://environmentalchemistry.com/yogi/chemicals/formula/C3H6N6O6.html Hexogen}}, it makes sense that terrorists would try some type of attack before either our primaries or our general election. I think they would use some type of car/truck bomb, since we’ve been shown vulnerable to that in the past.

For those of you not in the know, the reason I bring up our election is there is an election in a few days in Chechnya.

Given both the Spanish train attacks and the Russian jetliner attacks, it is now clear that terrorists are willing to strike in order to influence elections. We need, I think, to take measures to secure our own voting sites. What those measures are I leave to you to discuss. I suggest voting early and police patrols.

Will someone please tell me why we need to use the stem cells of aborted children to do stem cell research, when adult stem cells seem so much more promising?

Knowing the Issues in Arizona

Political link of the day is to the {{link http://www.azsos.gov/election/2004/General/ballotmeasures.htm ballot measures in Arizona}}, courtesy of the Secretary of State. Might as well know what’s on the ballot before you go vote.

In case you were wondering, the perennial favorite, the legislator pay raise, is on the ballot. Again.

Where Have All The Tangos Gone?

Today’s required reading can be found here: {{link http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/lacey200408250834.asp Assessing al Qaeda, by Jim Lacey}}. A good and heartening read, based on current observations of publicly available news. It poses an interesting hypothesis: the Global War On Terror is actually working.

Today’s gun link is an article about the effectiveness of the .223 as a battle cartridge. Not very encouraging. Any readers out there have any anecdotes about this cartridge or the M-16/AR-15 family? Feel free to share in the comments section.

Offending the Defenders

If there is one thing we’ve learned from the John Kerry medal flare-up, its that you don’t screw up when you identify which medals are awarded to whom and for what. Given the prevalence in the news of John Kerry’s exploits in Vietnam, you’d think the press would be extra careful in identifying medals, their recipients, and the reasons for giving them.

You’d be wrong. Both the Sunday Mirror and The Drudge Report screwed up majorly this weekend. They claimed Tony Blair had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Dumbest Snipers in Iraq

The Dumbest Snipers in Iraq

Lets take a look at an AP picture currently available at a Fox story here.

First, the duo are using the Dragunov SVD, a semi-automatic long-range rifle, built around the AK-47 receiver, chambering the 7.62x54R cartridge. This is the oldest currently used battle cartridge in the world. It is an excellent sniper round+gun combination for urban warfare, since it is semi-automatic and heavy enough to hit hard at long range.

Unfortunately for them, that’s where their good points end.
