A Completely Unacceptable Situation, Revisited

Remember my consternation from last week concerning the lack of combat essential equipment in Iraq? Well, I wrote to my Congressional representatives, (Grijalva, Kyl, and McCain) and none of them responded.

Except Grijalva. My reply to him follows. It is interesting, to say the least.

A Prime Example of Modern-Day Doublespeak

From the NY Post: “Al Franken Knocks Down Dean Heckler”

Apparently, a Lyndon Larouche supporter was heckling Dean, so Franken tackled him from behind. The money quote:

I’m neutral in this race but I’m for freedom of speech, which means people should be able to assemble and speak without being shouted down.”

But apparently, being knocked down is just fine. Someone smack this guy for his imbecility.

A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend …

A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend …

… to thaw out during one particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years ago.

Because both had jobs, they found it difficult co-ordinating their travel schedules.

It was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday, and his wife would follow him the next day.

Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel. In his room there was a computer, so he decided to send his wife an e-mail back in Minneapolis. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her address, and sent the e-mail without realising his error.

In Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband’s funeral. The dearly departed was a minister of many years who had been called home to glory following a heart attack.

The widow checked her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends.

Upon reading the first message, she fainted.

The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived

I know you are surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones.

I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

PS: Sure is hot down here!

Those New Hampshire folks can really pick the winner

Those New Hampshire folks can really pick the winner

Fox just posted a story listing the top two finishers in New Hampshire presidential primaries for the past 25 years. Turns out that when you examine the race for the non-incumbent party, the winner of the primary hasn’t won the nomination since 1988, and even then that winner lost the general election. It was all the way back in 1980 when the non-incumbent race picked both the nominee and the winner.

2000
Republicans: Sen. John McCain: 49%; George W. Bush: 31%
Republican Nominee: Bush

1996
Republicans: Pat Buchanan: 27%; Bob Dole: 26%
Republican Nominee: Dole

1992
Democrats: Paul Tsongas: 35%; Clinton: 26%
Democrat Nominee: Clinton

1988
Democrats: Michael Dukakis: 36%; Rep. Dick Gephardt: 20%
Democrat Nominee: Dukakis

1984
Democrats: Sen. Gary Hart: 37%; Vice President Walter Mondale: 28%
Democrat nominee: Mondale

1980
Republicans: Reagan: 50%; George H.W. Bush: 23%
Republican Nominee: Reagan

Given all this, why is the press making such a big deal out of such an inaccurate bellwether? If I was Howard Dean, I would be shooting for second in NH. But then, he’s crazy enough to try and beat John “F’n” Kerry. So since I’m pulling for Bush, should I be pulling for Kerry 1st and Dean 2nd?

Will Play Bach for Money

Will Play Bach for Money

KUAT FM, the local PBS classical music radio station, is having another begging pledge drive today. This is when they play 1 minute of music for every 3 minutes of senseless chatter. Their threat: give us $65,000 or we’ll keep talking and not play the music.

Why is it that there are no commercially supported classical music stations? It makes no sense to me, unless there is not enough of a market for one. Are companies not willing to spend money advertising on one? Or are there too many governmental restrictions on broadcasting, ones which make the cost of market entry too high?

Personally, I’m glad to write for ammo.

I am OUT of it

JeremyGilby.com celebrated its 2nd birthday the other day.

MM.net passed that date back on the 15th.

The fact that I passed that date without even noticing it shows how far out of it I am, and its all because I got engaged.

No, I wouldn’t change a thing.

U.S. Military
A Completely Unacceptable Situation

This is absolutely ridiculous.

Not that our soldiers shouldn’t have body armor. Not that their loved ones shouldn’t care for them. The problem is that OUR OWN GOVERNMENT can’t (or won’t?) issue it.

This has got to stop. I don’t normally recommend that people contact their government representatives (since it usually results in a complete waste of time), but GOOD GRIEF, why don’t they have basic combat essential equipment?????? Call, write, donate, do whatever you feel led to do in order to remedy this situation.

Israel Diplomat Defends Attack on Bomber Art in Stockholm

The piece that enraged the ambassador, “Snow White and the Madness of Truth,” was in the museum’s courtyard and featured a large basin filled with red fluid. A boat floated on top carrying a photo of a smiling Hanadi Jaradat, a woman who became a suicide bomber,

more accurately known as a murderess. Here’s a picture of the ‘art’ display.

Happy Religious Freedom Day

Happy Religious Freedom Day

Today is Religious Freedom Day. I recommend everyone celebrate by reading a banned book.

Like the Bible.

On a related side note, today’s Wizard of Id cartoon seems entirely appropriate. As for those who would like to contemplate the “separation” of church and state, consider the following: which group does the first amendment restrict with its words, Congress or the Church? That is, according to the wording of the amendment, is Congress prevented from telling a Church what to preach, or is the Church prevented from telling the Congress how to legislate?
